There has been lots of attention in the media recently explaining the right way to swaddle your babe and the effects of not doing in properly in the development of your little ones hips. WONDERWOMAN CHILDREN took this opportunity to speak to Sarah Twomey (HHA founder) to explore exactly what this all about and how we can help spread the message.

Sarah explained that Healthy Hips Australia is not saying to stop swaddling but just to avoid swaddling over the hips and legs. She also helped WWC understand what is hip dysplasia and explained that it is when the ball and socket of the hip don’t fit together in its normal position. HHA are actively spreading awareness about the  impact of swaddling over the hips and legs and that it can contribute to a higher risk of developing hip dysplasia.

So if you are anything like most parents who love swaddling our babes, recognising its contribution to sleeping and infants, and also the research indicating that it can actually help reduce SIDS you would be happy to know that swaddling is still in - but doing it wrong is out!  No matter what you use, whether it is in a baby carrier, or sleep product you want to see your baby sleeping in a position where they have the freedom to get into the healthy "M” position, also known as the “froggy position”, where knees are higher than their bottom with their legs apart.

This positon allows the infant to find a position of comfort that creates a happy healthy hip environment for their development.

Plum SwimwearThe sun has got his hat on and we’re starting to get into the summer vibe. It’s time to ditch our winter woollies in favour of thongs and swimmers for some serious beach action and fun. Unfortunately, the warm rays of the Australian sunshine does not come without some risk attached.

According to the Cancer Council NSW, Australia has the ‘highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two in three Australians (2 in 3 men and 3 in 5 women) will develop some form of skin cancer before the age of 70. Over 440,000 Australians are treated for skin cancer and more than 2000 Australians die each year from skin cancer’

Whilst the risks of sun exposure are real and frightening the good news is there are lots of ways to prevent damage caused by the sun such as applying sunscreen, avoiding the sun at peak times and wearing UPF 50+ swim suits, hats and sun glasses.
